PhD candidates who started on: January 1, 2023 (Second Call)

End of cycle: December 31, 2025

  • Submit the final report and the request for admission to the final examination to the Academic Board by November 30, 2025.
  • Submit the final thesis to the Academic Board by December 31, 2025.

It is possible to request an extension for the thesis submission by submitting a formal application to the Academic Board. The request must include a valid justification and receive the approval of the PhD supervisor.

Further details and guidelines can be found in the Final Examinations section of the PhD website.

Once the theses have been submitted, the Academic Board will appoint two reviewers for each one. If both evaluations are positive, the Board may authorize the candidate’s admission to the final examination, while also confirming the composition of the examination committee and the exam date.

All PhD students who have completed the three-year program and have applied for admission to the final exam must send the following documents by October 31, 2025 (unless an extension has been requested) to dottorato.sdv.ls@unisi.it:

  1. PDF copy of the thesis.
  2. PDF abstract of the thesis.
  3. short candidate profile/presentation (in PDF), including a brief description of the work carried out during the PhD, signed by both the candidate and the supervisor.

In addition, the body of the email must include:

  • the names and email addresses of two external reviewers, who must be university professors selected in consultation with the supervisor.

All documents will be submitted to dottorato.sdv.ls@unisi.it for the Board approval, and then officially forwarded to the external reviewers.

It is the responsibility of the PhD Secretariat for sending the thesis and the evaluation form to the reviewers.

The evaluators must submit their comments (in Italian or English), any suggestions or requests for changes, and a reasoned opinion either in favor of or against admission to the final defense, within one month.

If the reviewers issue a reasoned negative opinion, the PhD student must revise the thesis accordingly and may defend it within six months from the originally scheduled date.

The defense will take place at the San Miniato Science Campus of the University of Siena, on a date to be defined.
