Reproductive Biology and Comparative Spermatology of Insects

Research activity is mainly focused on the male and female reproductive apparatus of Insects, investigated under structural, ultrastructural and biochemical aspects.  Particularly:

  • Functional morphology of the male and female accessory glands
  • Biochemical characterization of accessory gland secretion
  • Sperm transfer and storage; functional morphology of storage organs
  • Polyandrous behaviour and sperm use
  • Antimicrobial  peptides related to the reproduction
  • Bacteria-insect interactions
  • Comparative ultrastructure of insect sperm cells
